And indeed he had been, with the permission of the Emperor, at first made one of the members of the Senate, but a few years afterwards the Emperor made him a senator. And as to the position he occupies in the Church of Rome, we can say something of what you have heard of him, since the Church of the West is an essential part of his life. As soon as he reached the age of sixty-five he began his career of martyrdom and of service, and he continued in this way, as much as he could, without being discouraged or suffering any harm through the fear of the Church.
